Having damaged hair can be a huge nightmare to any Dynasty Diva.
Your hair becomes dry and brittle even after moisturizing it. It gets tangled easily when you comb it and breaks excessively as it is pretty weak.
The good news is that having damaged hair is not the end of the world. There are a couple of steps you can take to remedy that. But first you need to know more about damaged natural hair to be in a better position to fix it.
What type of damage does your hair have?
Heat Damage
Caused by using a lot of heat on your hair while styling
Mechanical Damage
Occurs when you don’t take care of your hair properly. This includes over manipulation and tight hair styles.
Colour Damage
Takes place when you dye your hair the wrong way or when you don’t take good care of your dyed hair.
What does damaged hair look like?
- It loses moisture easily and becomes pretty dry.
- Hair is brittle and weak hence it does experience a lot of breakage.
- Your hair tangles easily as it is dry.
- Your hair doesn’t have elasticity. Hair elasticity is the ability of your hair to get back to its normal state after being stretched.
- A high number of split ends.
- At times, you may lose your lustrous hair color, resulting in it looking dull.
- A change in hair porosity signaling that your cuticle is damaged.
How Do I Deal With My Damaged Hair?
- Snip, snip, snip!
Split ends are bad news for any dynasty diva. This is when the ends of your natural hair split in to two or three parts. You cannot totally get rid of split ends. If you don’t try to prevent them, you will get them on your ends frequently. If you do take good care of your hair, you will still get split ends but not as frequently.
Have your split ends cut, by a professional, preferably your hair stylist, s soon as you spot them. If not, your hair shaft will continue splitting all the way up.
- Don’t Skip the Deep Conditioner!
Each time you wash your hair, make sure you follow up with a deep conditioner. Deep conditioning frequently and consistently reduces damage to your natural hair keeping it healthy. Deep conditioning moisturizes your hair, keeping it hydrated. It also nourishes your hair, helping to strengthen it.

- Be Careful With Heat
Using direct heat on your natural hair while styling may have damaging effects. Heat dries out your hair causing it to become weak and experience breakage. When you do want to use heat on your hair for styling, do consult your hair stylist. He or she will direct you on how best to approach the issue to avoid heat damage.
- Moisture, Moisture, Moisture!
Sometimes damaged hair is usually as a result of your hair being dry as it does not receive enough moisture. Moisturized hair is happy hair. You don’t have to go to great lengths to obtain moisture in your hair. All you have to do is make a couple of changes in your current natural hair regimen.
